The French Camp Elementary School 2020-2021 teacher of the year is Mrs. Tami McKnight. Mrs. McKnight began her school career in 1st grade at French Camp Elementary. She says that the influence of stellar teachers such as Polly Allen, Becky Rogers, and Terry Stacy firmly shaped her decision to become an educator. She joined the Choctaw County School District team in 2008 as a 2nd grade teacher at Ackerman Elementary School for one year. The next year she came to French Camp Elementary where she has taught 1st -5th grade ELA and self-contained
classrooms, 7th and 8th grade girls’ PE, 8th grade science and been the reading interventionist and a Beta Club sponsor. In her five years in 3rd grade, she has seen the implementation of the 3rd Grade Reading Gate test and shared in the success of her students with a nearly 100% pass rate. Mrs. McKnight is in her first year of teaching 1st grade at French Camp Elementary. She has successfully made the transition to 1st grade, and she is doing a phenomenal job closing the gap which was made after the students were out of school for five months due to Covid-19. Mrs. McKnight believes that reading is vital to student success in school and beyond, and she is passionately committed to ensuring the reading success of every student that she has the honor of teaching.
Mrs. McKnight says that each year she has been shaped and stretched as a teacher and a person by the students she has been privileged to spend the year with, and the 2015-2016 school year was no different. During that year, two DHS foster children came to be a part of the FCE family and were in her ELA classroom. She says that through the Lord’s leading and mountains of paperwork and red tape, she and her husband became foster parents to them in May of 2016. In December of 2017, their adoption was finalized and they became a family of nine. The process of working with DHS and children in the system has opened her eyes and heart in a whole new way to the unique needs and circumstances of the students in her care, and shaped her into an educator who genuinely treasures not only the minds of children, but their hearts as well. Mrs. McKnight says that being selected Teacher of the Year by her family at FCE is such an honor and the Lord has used being part of the Choctaw County School District to shape her life and the life of her family in ways she never would have imagined.
Pictured with Mrs. McKnight is Mr. Shane Burton, principal of French Camp Elementary School.
